What is arthritis?
There are several different forms of arthritis, but the one most commonly seen by your New Braunfels podiatrist is osteoarthritis, which is caused by the deterioration of cartilage, the cushioning tissue between the joints. As cartilage begins to wear, pain, swelling and inflammation develop, making regular activities uncomfortable. Left untreated, arthritis of the foot can cause deformities and difficulty standing and walking.
How is foot arthritis treated?
At Foot & Ankle Surgery of New Braunfels, your podiatrist's main goal is to relieve pain associated with arthritis and keep you on your feet. A combination of anti-inflammatory medication, custom orthotics (shoe inserts) and physical therapy is generally how arthritis is managed immediately following diagnosis. Some patients will need to follow a weight-loss and exercise program if their arthritis has been exacerbated by obesity. If these methods fail to bring relief, your podiatrist may recommend surgery. A variety of surgeries are utilized in the treatment of arthritis; they can include cleaning of the joint, restriction of the movement that causes pain, or joint replacement.
